Italy Employment Update: Ordinary and Causal Redundancy Fund “Weather Events”

National Labour Inspectorate, note no. 5056 of 13 July 2023

The National Labour Inspectorate draws attention to the protection profiles of workers for the risks related to heat damage.

In particular, the Inspectorate highlights how excessive exposure to thermal stress leads to an increase in the risk of accidents given that work performance is exposed to particular situations of vulnerability.

It highlights, therefore, the possibility for companies, in the case of high temperatures recorded by weather reports or “perceived” due to the particular type of work in progress, to request the ordinary redundancy fund evoking the reason “weather events”.

Temperatures above 35° Celsius are considered high.

Regardless of the temperatures detected, CIGO is recognized in all cases in which the company’s safety manager orders the suspension of work as he considers there are risks or dangers for the safety and health of workers, including cases in which the suspensions are due to excessive temperatures. (INPS circular no. 139/2016 and Hermes Inps message no. 1856/2017).
